SLC Library Green Roof

A very successful project that combines environmental and social considerations within a typical architectural domain. Turning, at a high level, a normally unconsidered canvas into a work of art..

PROJECT STATEMENT

The Salt Lake City Main Library Roof Renovation began as a critical technical repair to stop leaks threatening collections and interior spaces. This necessary work became an opportunity to transform the deteriorating terrace into a vibrant public park, celebrating accessibility, sustainability, and community life.

Located atop a landmark civic building, the redesigned rooftop invites people of all ages to gather, learn, and experience sweeping views of downtown and the Wasatch Mountains. Design solutions embrace grade changes with accessible walkways and tiered amphitheater seating, while reimagining underused back-of-house areas into welcoming public spaces.

Pollinator gardens support active honeybee hives and educational programs. Larger-caliper trees provide immediate shade, and native, drought-tolerant plantings thrive with efficient drip irrigation. A tray-based green roof mitigates heat island effects and manages stormwater sustainably. Durable, low-maintenance materials ensure longevity, while safety glass railings preserve views and protect visitors.

This project honors the library’s architectural legacy, setting a new benchmark for civic design and demonstrating how underused spaces can be recaptured for the public realm.
