Salt Lake City’s iconic Main Library’s rooftop. was closed in 2023 to repair multiple leaks and upgrade mechanical, electrical, and safety systems, the new rooftop features a redesigned landscape with more space and amenities for public use.
GSBS Architects redesigned the rooftop experience, using a collaborative process and universal design principles to include more shade and seating, a children’s play area, a small amphitheater, and landscaped areas with native plants and trees. Glass panels were added along the rooftop’s perimeter to improve safety and highlight the rooftop’s stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake Valley. The Library rooftop’s signature beehives – a favorite of children and adults alike – have been given a new glass-enclosed home.
